Let me share with you a story from the first time I went to Julio and discovered that I was in fact an embarrassment to cake eaters everywhere. I felt like a little dessert after a very long brunch and innocently (or stupidly depending on the perspective) asked for one of those ‘little cakes.’ At which the waiter scowled and with a mix of anger and sarcasm asked, ‘do you mean a friand.’ Yes, yes I did.
This is the point where I now to rush to put a huge caveat on the above incident and let you know that it is not at all representative of the other staff at Julio. The staff, aside from angry friand man, are lovely and will read a paper with you if you are alone, help you out with the wi-fi and even explain what ‘bravas style’ means. For those who are innocent/ignorant like me it means a spicy Spanish origin sauce.
The atmosphere at Julio is very relaxed and hiding at the corner of Miller St and Ida St in North Fitzroy is a lovely out of the way place where you can have your breakfast undisturbed by traffic or crowds and you can even read their papers whilst you wait or spend time in peace with your laptop. It’s almost like a loungeroom away from home.
This particular time when Ms. Pseudonym and I ventured back to Julio we both had the poached organic egga with potato rosti, avocado and a bravas style sauce and it was great. The potato rosti was a particular delight, perfectly cooked and not too heavy. I can also recommend the pancakes and almost everything else on the menu as we have tried it all. The menu is a good mix of classic ingredients with a modern twist and all reasonably priced.
And, do we want to stay for breakfast? Definitely, just make sure you ask for a friand and not a little cake.
