Brunch until 3pm, dinners as well
You’ll find Southpaw on Gertrude St, Fitzroy. A cafe by day and a bar by night Southpaw is a mix of 30s style interior with old lamps and vintage photos with rockabilly artwork out the back.
Southpaw staff are incredibly friendly and had a good discussion with Willis about Graveyard Train, which I discovered are a ‘horror country band’ who play chains, so check them out. A minor quibble, the service was a little confused, they asked me if I wanted a drink before I sat down but didn’t bring menus, brought lots of water but had to ask several times for a glass. It was a Sunday morning though, so we weren’t too stressed.
To the food, Willis and Scotch on the Rocks both had the Cat’s Meow, one with eggs and one with avocado instead. The Cat’s Meow comes with poached eggs, potato & corn hash, roasted tomato, rosemary mushrooms and spinach on organic sourdough. They both loved their meals and were happy for the no issues with the menu change.
I had my standard fare, poached eggs with bacon and avocado. I was very happy that the bacon wasn’t fatty, the avocado was fresh and the poached eggs were nice and runny. Perfecto.
To end, an anecdote: longtime readers of this blog may remember the review of Bebida and the runaway nun. Well who should go a wandering by Southpaw today? Nuns! I think they are on a mission to save Willis
And, do we want to stay for breakfast? Of course and will be heading back for dinner
