Breakfast and Lunch Every Day
Mama Bear is a new addition to Flemington, an up and coming area for great breakfast places.
Getting straight into it I had mixed feelings about Mama Bear, the tea was a single cup with a bag (no pot, the cup already has water in it), it led to an unpleasant, slightly cold tea without enough milk in it.
In addition the meals were on the small side. The food was lovely, but the portion sizes seemed stingy, especially for the Egyptian Princess who only got one piece of bread with her ‘Poached Eggs with Honey Glazed Roasted Pumpkin Puree, Crumbed Goats Cheese, Baby Spinach, Toasted Pinenuts and Sumac. Such a great meal could have done with an extra piece of bread and some extra pumpkin puree.
I had the ‘Scrambled Eggs with Caramelised Onions, Chives, Chilli Flakes, Shaved Parmesan, Pork and Fennel Sausage’. The meal size was perfect, and the meal generally great although the sweetness of caramelised onions overpowered the chives and parmesan, but that is probably more of a trial and error situation.
Atmosphere wise, inside it was great and the mix of table types was great and our water was always topped up without asking. The only issue was that we originally sat out the back, but we couldn’t stay there because the smell of manure was so overwhelming. I’m not sure what caused the issue, fertiliser, plumbing or the neighbours but they really should talk to people about it and explain before sending them out the back. We ended up going back inside.
This has been a hard review, because I did enjoy breakfast at Mama Bear but getting a cup of lukewarm water for tea, a mini meal for my friend, and smelling manure had an unfortunate dampening effect on the experience.
And, do we want to stay for breakfast? Would head back, but will give them some time to make some improvements
